Hanging art doesn’t have to be complicated! A little measuring goes a long way in making sure your artwork looks great and stays secure. Here’s a simple way to get it just right:
1️⃣ Find the Right Height
A good rule of thumb is to hang the center of your artwork at eye level—about 57–60 inches from the floor. Mark this spot on your wall with a piece of tape.
2️⃣ Measure Your Hardware
Make sure your artwork hangs securely. If it already has hardware, great! If not, D-rings and wire are an easy solution. This type of hardware ensures stability, and I recommend this set here. For heavier artwork, opt for a larger size like these heavy duty D-Rings & Wire.
To install, measure about 1/4 of the way down from the top of the canvas—this placement helps keep the artwork snug against the wall. For particularly large pieces, you may want to skip the wire and instead attach D-rings directly to the back, then hang the artwork using two anchored screws right off the D-Rings. Just be sure to use a level and double-check measurements for accuracy. Below is a graphic on how to adhere the D-Rings & Wire.
3️⃣ Place Your Hook on the Wall
The placement of your hook or nail depends on the type of hanging hardware you’re using:
For D-rings: Measure the distance from the top of your artwork to the D-ring.
For wire: Pull the wire taut and measure from the top of your artwork to its highest point.
Once you have this measurement, subtract it from half the height of your artwork. This will tell you how much higher your hook or nail should be placed above your center mark for proper hanging.
Below is a guide on where to place your D-rings and how to securely wrap the wire around them for proper support.
That’s it! A little prep makes a big difference in how your art looks in your space. For the best results, always use screws with wall anchors to ensure your artwork is secure and won’t fall. After years of testing different hanging solutions—from Command hooks to nails—this method has proven to be the most reliable for both security and longevity. Knowing your artwork is safely in place brings peace of mind!
